Osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as ‘wear and tear’ can affect any joint in the body, the most common joints to be affected being the hip and knee.

Inflammation
Osteoarthritis is an inflammation of a joint, usually in principle caused by the wearing down of the cartilage of the joint, and the subsequent changes that occur in the joint. Some factors that will make your joints wear faster are overuse, (repetitive) trauma to the joint (including that of faulty mechanics), certain lifestyle factors, such as diet, level and type of exercise and body weight.

Lifestyle/ exercise
Of course it is important to move joints, even joints that are worn, but it is especially important to move joints well. To protect joints, it is also important to strengthen the muscles that move and stabilise them. This means doing the right type of exercise, and making sure the joints and muscles are not restricted.

Chiropractic
Not only can your chiropractor advise you on the right type of exercise, (s)he can also check the function of your joints and muscles to ensure optimal function, either as a preventive measure, or to help relieve symptoms. (S)he can also advise you on the right type of brace or foot support and suggest nutritional supplements that may help reduce inflammation or help regenerate cartilage.
